And abdikation in Belgium
I guess June 21th is the Date

Another ceremony to look forward to.

Another ceremony to look forward to.
Well if it is the same as his fathers it is not much to see. The new king just appears in Parliament ans swears an oath of office and then it is done.

How were the King's of the United Italy enthroned? I don't think I have ever read anything about their installation.

They never had a proper installation.
Vittorio Emanuele II had been already crowned King of Sardinia when Italy was finally united, so I suppose he didn't had another coronation. Furthermore, the Crown of Italy, also known as the Iron Crown of Lombardy, was considered a reliquary (the tradition has it that there's a nail used at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ incorporated in it) and one of the oldest royal insignia of the Holy Roman Empire. now, because of the conflicts with the Holy See and the Habsburgs, the use of that crown for a coronation was seen as rather untimely. So the king decided to keep the Crown of the kingdom of Sardinia in his coat of arm. Umberto 1st wanted to have a coronation ceremony with this ancient crown of Italy (used by Napoleon as well) but only when the political climate was more favorable, introducing this piece among the Savoy's regalia little by little and creating the Order of the Crown of Italy, but his assassination in 1900 interrupted his plans, but the crown was exhibited at his funeral (it happened also at Vittorio Emanuele's funerals in 1878) and his tomb at the Pantheon in Rome bears a bronze copy.
His son Vittorio Emanuele III never wanted a coronation.

The Coronation Coach of King Charles X of France was completely gilded with gold leaf.
The interior is trimmed in crimson silk velvet.
George Handel wrote the Coronation Anthems for George II in 1727.
This music was for King George II of England's coronation.

Henri II of France was crowned at Reims on July 26, 1547.
His black velvet doublet and coronation robes were embroidered not with the lilies of France but with Diane de Poitiers' insignias in seed pearls: her quivers, bows and arrows, her entwined crescent moons, and their initials (an H and double D).

In Napoleon His Wives and Women, Christopher Hibbert wrote about Napoleon I's imperial coronation:

When Napoleon, grasping a scepter, emerged from the robing room next to the cathedral, he appeared more exotic than ever. He was now wearing a purple velvet mantle, lined in ermine and sewn with bees, and, on his head, was a wreath of gold laurel leaves. :napoleon:

At noon on January 18, 1871, King Wilhem I of Prussia was crowned as the first emperor of a united Germany as Wilhelm I.
Wilhelm's coronation occurred in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles near Paris, France.

The coronation ceremony of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia broke with tradition because the Empress was crowned on the same day as the Emperor and not three days later.

In The Queen & Her Court, Jerrold M. Packard wrote:

Elizabeth was crowned "Queen of England" only, not of Great Britain nor of the United Kingdom nor of the Commonwealth. The reason was that the coronation is a ceremony of the Church of England, and only in England is this denomination the "established" church.

King William I, William the Conqueror, had his coronation on Christmas Day, December 25, 1066 at Westminster Abbey.

King Stephen of England had his coronation on Christmas Day, December 25, 1141 at Canterbury Cathedral. This was the second coronation for Stephen. He had first been crowned King of England on December 26, 1135 at Westminster Abbey.

Do you think there is significance in the date that the sovereign chooses for his Coronation Day? :king2::king2::crown::crown3::crown5::crown6:

There are a few dates in the Swedish coronation dates that are repeated:
* June 29th - Karl Knutson, Kristian I, Erik XIV and Karl XIII
* November 26th - Hans and Adolf Fredrik
* September 28th - Karl XI and Oskar I
* May 3rd - Fredrik I and Karl XV

Karl X Gustav's coronation took place on June 6th, after the abdication of his predecessor (and cousin) Kristina. The date was most certainly chosen, as it was the date their great-grandfather had been elected king of Sweden by the Riksdag in 1523.

Either on December 25th 1000 or January 1st 1001, the first day of the second millennium, king (saint) Stephen I of Hungary was crowned with the holy crown of Hungary.

Coronation Oath, 2 June 1953

http://www.royal.gov.uk/ImagesandBroadcasts/Historic%20speeches%20and%20broadcasts/CoronationOath2June1953.aspx

In the Coronation ceremony of 2 June 1953, one of the highlights was when The Queen made her Coronation Oath (taken from the Order of Service for the Coronation).

The Queen having returned to her Chair, (her Majesty having already on Tuesday, the 4th day of November, 1952, in the presence of the two Houses of Parliament, made and signed the Declaration prescribed by Act of Parliament), the Archbishop standing before her shall administer the Coronation Oath, first asking the Queen,
Madam, is your Majesty willing to take the Oath?
And the Queen answering,
I am willing.

The Archbishop shall minister these questions; and The Queen, having a book in her hands, shall answer each question severally as follows:

Archbishop. Will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the Peoples of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon, and of your Possessions and the other Territories to any of them belonging or pertaining, according to their respective laws and customs?
Queen. I solemnly promise so to do.

Archbishop. Will you to your power cause Law and Justice, in Mercy, to be executed in all your judgements?
Queen. I will.

Archbishop. Will you to the utmost of your power maintain the Laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel? Will you to the utmost of your power maintain in the United Kingdom the Protestant Reformed Religion established by law? Will you maintain and preserve inviolably the settlement of the Church of England, and the doctrine, worship, discipline, and government thereof, as by law established in England? And will you preserve unto the Bishops and Clergy of England, and to the Churches there committed to their charge, all such rights and privileges, as by law do or shall appertain to them or any of them?
Queen. All this I promise to do.

Then the Queen arising out of her Chair, supported as before, the Sword of State being carried before her, shall go to the Altar, and make her solemn Oath in the sight of all the people to observe the premisses: laying her right hand upon the Holy Gospel in the great Bible (which was before carried in the procession and is now brought from the Altar by the Arch-bishop, and tendered to her as she kneels upon the steps), and saying these words:

The things which I have here before promised, I will perform and keep. So help me God.

Then the Queen shall kiss the Book and sign the Oath.
The Queen having thus taken her Oath shall return again to her Chair, and the Bible shall be delivered to the Dean of Westminster.

The Coronation of King Carl XIV Johan of Sweden as King Carl III Johan of Norway
The Royal House of Norway - The Coronation of King Carl Johan

Henry VI of England had two English coronations. The first was in November 1429 at Westminster Abbey. The second was in October 1470 at St. Paul's Cathedral.
Was it necessary that Henry was crowned in 1470?

A gentleman loaned me The Coronation of Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Official Souvenir Programme.
Included was A Prayer for the King's Reign written by John Masefield, Poet Laureate.
The Duke of Gloucester, Prince Henry wrote The Foreward.
Details about the Coronation Procession were included.

Yes - this was during the Wars of the Roses and he had just regained the throne so needed a new coronation to show that he was back as King.

Tonight at 21:00 the full Pathe coverage and a short colour film of the #coronation of King George VI

The Ceremony: 1937 Coronation- Starts on BBC Parliament at 9PM Tonight

"BBC Parliament marks the 80th anniversary of the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on 12 May 1937. For the first time on British television, a complete showing of Pathe's original black and white newsreel coverage of the coronation of HM George VI and Queen Elizabeth in Westminster Abbey on 12 May 1937.

This was the first time the coronation service had been filmed. The film shows the processions to and from the Abbey as well as the coronation service inside the Abbey itself. Unusually, the King was crowned only five months into his reign as the date had been set for his brother Edward VIII's coronation which of course never took place following his abdication in December 1936. As George VI said at the time "Same date, different king."."

In Colour: 1937 Coronation

"BBC Parliament marks the 80th anniversary of the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on 12 May 1937. Pathe's Dufray-Chromex colour film of the coronation processions to and from the Westminster Abbey. This brief eight minute film from the earliest days of commercial colour film gave viewers some idea of the brilliance of the coronation procession. The interior was filmed in black and white only."

Hopefully someone will record this and put it up on YouTube afterwards.

Wow, I'm amazed how clear this recording is, even from 1937! My dad's dad had just turned 15 three weeks prior, Dad's mom was turning 15 in December '37; Mom's mom was 19 and Mom's dad was 25 (turning 20 and 26, both in October 1937). Both grandmothers were pregnant when Elizabeth officially succeeded to the throne in February of 1952 (Dad 6 1/2 months along and Mom 3 months along), on Coronation Day '53, my dad was a little over 13 months old (with a 2 1/2 month-old baby brother) and my mom was 10 months old.

I was born just short of a month before King George VI died. Its amazing for me to be able to watch his coronation in full and realize that I wasn't even a twinkle in anybody's eye yet at that time.

Thanks so much for posting the video of the complete coronation. I've not sat and viewed it yet but its something I do plan on doing probably later on tonight.

I watched it today and I was enchanted by the whole ceremony. I can't help but wonder how the next Coronation will look like. I love how Westminster Abbey is completely changed and built up to accommodate so many guest. I want to see full pomp and pageantry for the next one.

When my grandparents were in school, they sang God Save The King every day (my parents sang God Save The Queen and O Canada). My maternal grandfather, Samuel Gerrard Embrey, Jr. was born in Birmingham, and came to Canada in 1919 when he was eight years old, after his parents both died of the Spanish Flu (he was an only child), and he lived in an orphanage run by nuns and worked as a home boy. My youngest brother got his 6 foot 1 height from him, and me and my two younger brothers, the three youngest grandchildren on both sides, never met him because he died of lung cancer in October 1978, just 16 days short of his 67th birthday. I didn't come along until the end of July 1990 (on Charles and Diana's ninth wedding anniversary, to be exact).

I wonder how many Coronation Robes still survive in the Royal Collection? I would love to see a row of all the surviving Robes from the previous Monarchs.
