King Karl XV (1826-1872) and Louise of The Netherlands (1828-1871)

Well, there would be no need for Karl to produce an heir after Oscar had four sons. Marengo is probably completely right also about that a divorce wouldn't be a smart thing at all at the time.
  2. Furienna

King Karl XV (1826-1872) and Louise of The Netherlands (1828-1871)

While he couldn't be faithful to her, I do think that he was fond of Louise in his own way.
  3. Furienna

Prince Bertil, Duke of Halland (1912-1997)

Some people might have thought so, but he was already with Lilian at that point.
  4. Furienna

Queen Mary, consort of George V (1867-1953)

But I don't think that Elizabeth and Margaret were "of York" since their father was the king.

    Marriages Between British Royal Cousins

How was Henry related to Anne of Cleves?
  6. Furienna

    Opposition to Royal Marriages

And I would think that the public would be outraged as well. So there's no way that George could fullfil his duties with a scandalous partner on his side.
  7. Furienna

    Queen Victoria (1819-1901)

She also had a half-brother on her father's side.
  8. Furienna

King Gustaf V (1858-1950) and Victoria of Baden (1862-1930)

Actually, I don't believe that it would be considered as scandalous as it was back in the '50s.

The Change of the Act of Succession - 1979 Constitution Change

Yes, I don't believe that anybody today doubts that Victoria will make a fantastic queen. But it was a bit weird that Carl Philip lost his title even though he only was a baby. It would have made more sense to let the change start with the next generation, which is what they did in Norway.
  10. Furienna

King Edward VII (1841-1910) and Queen Alexandra (1844-1925)

I think I must have missed something. What exactly did Wilhelm do to his sister?
  11. Furienna

King Gustaf V (1858-1950) and Victoria of Baden (1862-1930)

King Carl XVI Gustaf later said that he had been in the lap of someone, who had been in the lap of Napoleon's first fiancée. (Gustaf V's great-grandmother Désirée had indeed been engaged to Napoleon.) That makes you feel how far back the Bernadotte dynasty goes...

    Kristina, Queen of Sweden (1626-1689)

Interestingly, this thread is bumped just as I'm reading a book about Queen Kristina. It is really good, but it's really sad that she seems to have looked down at other women for being weak. And I guess that a lot of that can be blamed on her bad relationship with her mother.
  13. Furienna

King Karl XV (1826-1872) and Louise of The Netherlands (1828-1871)

Indeed, it seems to me that Lovisa didn't have an easy life with her in-laws. I have even seen accusations of her abusing her children, but I don't know how true that is.

    The Battenberg - Mountbattens

Yes, and she also was the oldest sister of Alexandra, who was the last empress of Russia, and mother of Louise Mountbatten, the queen of Sweden. :flowers:
  15. Furienna

Duke and Duchess of Windsor (1894-1972) and (1895-1986)

But did he really "take money" though? What I thought was that he got money from George VI after the abdication as compensation for giving up some estates?
  16. Furienna

King Edward VII (1841-1910) and Queen Alexandra (1844-1925)

Yeah, but the UK was also at war with Germany at that point.
  17. Furienna

    Edinburgh and Wessex Titles

True, but it feels weird that the son of a monarch doesn't have a dukedom. Then again, his kids aren't styled as princess and prince either.
  18. Furienna

Prince Bertil, Duke of Halland (1912-1997)

I can't believe that I missed this story, but it was really cute. :flowers:
  19. Furienna

    Opposition to Royal Marriages

What I know is that Lennart had a really bad relationship with his uncle Gustav VI Adolf. But I can't say what happened between them. Lennart also didn't like his cousin Gustav Adolf much. But he did have sympathy for him since he had dyslexia and struggled with that.
  20. Furienna

Prince Wilhelm of Sweden (1884-1965) and Grand Duchess Maria of Russia (1890–1958)

Ah, then it makes more sense. Thank you. :flowers:

Photos of then Prince and Crown Prince Carl Gustaf

Wow... I had never realized that the age gap between Desirée and Christina was that big.
  22. Furienna

Duke and Duchess of Windsor (1894-1972) and (1895-1986)

But if she loved Ernest, why did she start an affair with David?
  23. Furienna

    Kristina, Queen of Sweden (1626-1689)

It is very much worth a look. :flowers:
  24. Furienna

Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918) and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (Alix) (1872-1918)

This! :previous: Also, it is not so much about what Nicholas was like as a person. But it rather is about him being a symbol of a lost era, and a marture.
  25. Furienna

Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918) and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (Alix) (1872-1918)

Now, that was bound to happen after seventy years of a Communist dictatorship. That he was murdered also gives him sympathy in retrospect, I guess.
