Monarchies & Republics: Future and Benefits

I'm a republican. It's appalling that the position of head of state is still hereditary in some modern democracies. What am I doing on this forum then? Well, royalty fascinates me. I like their connection with history, their bloodlines and relationships etc. On this forum there's a lot of...

    Succession and Membership Issues

This article from January this year claims that Abe "plans to encourage debate on other ways to make the imperial succession more stable." Report: Japan to drop plan to allow female monarch Surely that means that the only option is to put the former imperial branches back in the succession...

    Succession and Membership Issues

I was under the impression that the succession law would be changed, meaning that the former imperial branches, which lost their imperial status after WWII, would be put back in the line of succession. Will this change take place or have they given up on this to?

    Royalty of South Africa

Questions about subnational traditional monarchies in modern republics. I've read about certain republics like Uganda, South Africa etc where tribal monarchies still persist, with a dynasty that retains a court and often local prestige and influence; some are officially installed with the...

Royal Family Of Nepal - Shah dynasty

There's some confusion about this. I believe that they have done both of these things, i.e. they have changed the succession to equal primogeniture, AND given themselves the right to appoint the heir to the throne. That allows them to skip Paras or any unsuitable person, but the succession is...

    A Swedish Prince Named Johan?

Maybe you met Carl Johan Edward Bernadotte, Count af Wisborg (born 1970-12-07). He is a male-line great-great-grandson of King Oscar II, but he's technically not a prince. He is not in line to succeed to the Swedish throne, but he is number 891 in line to the British throne.

    Who Will Reign Next

Margrethe II is a smoker, so maybe she will get cancer? I would say that Crown Prince Frederik will become king first. Carl XVI Gustaf probably has about 30-35 years left to live, considering how old his predecessors became. Victoria will have to wait...

Which Country Could Become A Monarchy?

But that would mean that Hawaii would have to secede from the USA and become an independent nation, right? Or can a state in the USA choose to have a hereditary governorship?

Which Country Could Become A Monarchy?

Do you think that there is any country in the world that will become a monarchy - again or for the first time? Personally, I think that it probably won’t happen, but if I have to choose one country, I would say: Serbia. This country has been through so much and maybe the current pretender...

    Female Pretenders To Abolished Monarchies?

Well, she is not really a pretender yet, since her father is still alive, but I get your point.

Which Country Could Next Abolish Their Monarchy?

If we look at the rest of the world, then I would say Nepal (it get's decided in June, I believe). King Gyanendra screwed up big time. I also believe that Australia will become a republic when Elizabeth II dies.

Daniel's Future: Discussion (his role, title, orders, pressure etc.)

That's very interesting Henri M, thanks! I hadn't heard about this before you mentioned it. It makes sense that: The title King should be reserved for reigning Kings only, and The title Queen should be reserved for reigning Queens only.

Daniel's Future: Discussion (his role, title, orders, pressure etc.)

That's one way to solve the problem, but I propose that: The wife of a King should be called a Princess, or Princess Consort. (Prinsessgemål) The husband of a Queen should be called a Prince, or Prince Consort. (Prinsgemål) It is important to know who really is the Head of State, and if...

A marriage between Prince Hisahito and Princess Aiko?

Well, marriages between cousins is legal in Japan, and seems to be quite common. The frequency of cousin marriages in Japan is about 4 in 1000. The important question is fertility. Hisahitos future wife MUST be able to have children. What if Aiko has inherited some of her mothers problems in...

Presentation of Prince Hisahito: Sept. 15, 2006.

Do you have a source on this? Isn't this just a rumour? It would have been more logical if Akishino and Kiko were encouraged to produce at least one son, so that the succession would have been secured. Then Naruhito and Masako wouldn't have felt this enormous pressure to produce an heir. My...

The Change of the Act of Succession - 1979 Constitution Change

OK. But I still don't think that it's wrong to say 1980. The changes went into effect then, and for me, that's what matters.

The Change of the Act of Succession - 1979 Constitution Change

Ok, 1 January 1980. But you have to agree that 1980 is the year that is most commonly used when the change is mentioned: http://www.royalcourt.se And let's not forget the commemorative coin: http://www.riksbank.se/upload/Bilder_riksbank/Kat_sedlar_mynt1/20b_lag.jpg I still think it's correct...

The Change of the Act of Succession - 1979 Constitution Change

By the way, I think it's more correct to say that the Act of Succession (Successionsordningen) was changed in 1980, and not 1979. 1980 was the year that the change went into effect, and 1980 is the year that is used in the media when the change is mentioned.

Debate on the Reform of the Spanish Constitution (Re: Succession)

The real question here is: if Felipe has a son, will that son be robbed of his birthright as heir, and be knocked down a couple of steps in the order of succession? Or will the new succession law start with the children of that yet to be born prince? This would be a lot easier if Felipe never...

The Change of the Act of Succession - 1979 Constitution Change

maidmarion: Have you read my previous posts? I do support a gender neutral succession! Such a succession should not, however, rob a person born as a crown prince of his birthright. Can't we all agree on that?

The Change of the Act of Succession - 1979 Constitution Change

It amazes me that they are just as stupid about this in Spain. Exactly the same situation will occur in Spain, a boy will be born and then robbed of his birthright. Changes in the succession should be done at a time when no potential heirs are being born. They could have changed the succession...

The Change of the Act of Succession - 1979 Constitution Change

Let me rephrase that, then. I hope that Victoria never gives birth to an heir. Nicer or worse? Long live King Carl XVII Philip!

The Change of the Act of Succession - 1979 Constitution Change

You're absolutely right, if the European monarchies wants to survive, then a gender neutral succession is inevitable. There isn't really any good argument against such a succession. However, Carl Philip is the rightful Crown Prince of Sweden. I hope that Victoria never gets married, so that...

The Change of the Act of Succession - 1979 Constitution Change

Well, as I previously wrote, this is my personal experience from discussions with friends, co-workers etc. The feeling I get is that people who know that Carl Philip was a crown prince for some time, tend to think that it was wrong to take that away from him. And let's not forget that the...
