General News about King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia

TheRoyalCouturier, I don't have an answer to your question but I have heard, or at least read, that the marriage between Juan Carlos and Sofia is not very happy and he has been unfaithful. The government said the royal couple would not be celebrating their golden anniversary (in 2012)...

    Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587)

Please don't misunderstand my comment -- My post was not meant as criticism of the Scots -- I admire them greatly and find nothing wrong in their nationalistic pride. It is a reflection of their thirst for independence from the English and while I admire the English (as well as the Scots)...

    Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587)

It seems the Scots are determined to resurrect their national pride and identity by reclaiming their history independent of the English.

    Queen Victoria (1819-1901)

I could see that if slavery still existed in the British Empire, Queen Victoria may have been dismayed by this fact but I doubt that it would have made her hesitate to get married. She was madly in love with Albert and that would have been uppermost in her mind.

    Royal Burials

How wonderful. I enjoyed the biography of Princess Alice by Vickers. It would be incredible to be able to see her tomb in the church. She greatly admired the religious devotion of her aunts, Empress Alexandra and Grand Duchess Elizabeth.

The British Nobility thread 1: Ending 2022

Is it because a woman takes her husband's status and can be elevated (or lowered) when she marries? What I mean is when the daughter of a peer marries someone below her rank, doesn't she automatically take his rank? If so, then when a man is knighted, his wife takes his rank, but when a woman...

    Elizabeth I (1533-1603)

Nice article but I don't necessarily see it as an act by a subversive artist. As the article states near the end, the Tudors appeared to recycle wooden panels by painting over them. What better way than for Walsingham to show his distaste for Catholicism than by having his portrait painted...

    Queen Victoria (1819-1901)

:previous: I agree. Rather harsh assessment and false to boot! Victoria may not have been fond of infants and toddlers but I have never seen evidence that she hated her children. I think Albert scolded her for not being maternal when the children were very young.

Romanov Rescue 1917-1919: Action and Inaction

I disagree. While many Russians may not have actively joined the revolution, they detested Alexandra and Nicholas, especially her. The people were starving, poor, and tired of the losses from the war. They may not have wanted the whole family massacred, but they certainly wanted the Tsar off...

Could Nicholas II have changed the Imperial Succession?

I wonder if he ever considered allowing Olga to inherit if Alexei died without heirs? Surely the family considered the possibility that Alexei would die young and therefore changing the laws of succession may have made the family breathe a little easier. But then, knowing that the crown may...

Romanov Rescue 1917-1919: Action and Inaction

I think Alexandra never believed, until it was too late, that the Russian people would rise up against her husband. There was no plan to send the children out of the country and once they were trapped, it was not going to happen. No country would take the family and the government was not...

Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918) and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (Alix) (1872-1918)

I don't think Alexanda was a snob but she was very reserved, uncomfortable in public, only at ease around family members and long time friends -- all of this probably contributed to any image which portrayed her as looking down at others.

Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918) and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (Alix) (1872-1918)

My dear vkrish, You may not "appreciate" the marriage of Nicholas and Alexandra, however flawed it was, but it does appear to be the union of two people who were greatly in love. Alone or together, they were ill-suited to lead a country but there is no denying that the two were in love with...

Tsar Alexander III (1845-1894) and Empress Marie Feodorovna (Dagmar) (1847-1928)

My dear Tuna, I think Alexander's children (wth the exception of Michael and Olga, the two youngest) were scared of their father's bluster but from all accounts, I think he very much enjoyed his family life. The royal family lived in fear of assassination at all times, but enjoyed their...

Grand Duke Kyrill (1876-1938) and Grand Duchess Victoria Melita 'Ducky' (1876-1936)

:previous: My dear BeatrixFan, Thanks for the reply. I will have to get the book and read it--it sounds like a good read. I do recall reading somewhere that Cyril broke Ducky's heart when she found out he had been unfaithful to her. It sounds like she was the more noble and admirable of...

Grand Duke Kyrill (1876-1938) and Grand Duchess Victoria Melita 'Ducky' (1876-1936)

My dear BeatrixFan, I must read this book. Thank you for your thoughts on what might have been. Do you feel, after reading the book, that the author was objective about his subjects and how they were perceived by the Russians? The book seems to paint the Vladimirovni in a much more flattering...
