The Chelsea Flower Show is taken place this week.

The Princess of Wales was the first member of the family who arrived to attend today, May 22:

Its a years of firsts and The first Chelsea Flower Show since the death of the late Queen.

Having just watched Ep9 of Succession, it was strange to see 'Tom' (Matthew Macfadyen) there! I'm not going this year and it's sad to think of QE2 not being there.

The King and Queen, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester an Princess Alexandra also attended today.

It includes a topiary representation of Emma, the fell pony who was seen at the late Queen (it still feels strange saying that)'s funeral procession.

The Chelsea Flower Show takes place from May 21 to May 25 this year.

Today, May 20, is the press day and King Charles as the new Patron will attend together with Queen Camilla and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Please could I help with a little information?



The Monday of Chelsea Flower Show causes a bit of confusion because of the mix of people who attend. The day opens at 9.30am and is technically ‘Press Day’ and the attendees are a mix of ‘general’ celebrities ranging from the ‘classy’ [e.g. Judy Dench] to reality tv stars. Some of these people are invited along to bring [alleged] glamour’ [of a kind] to the Chelsea and are a magnet for press photographers. Others are invited to give publicity to the various gardens, particularly those gardens that partnered with charities.



Other invited attendees are noted gardeners and other fortunate individuals like your humble Diarist.



At 3.30pm visitors are ‘cleared out’ in order to prepare for the Royal visit that takes place a little later. Security is very tight, with sniffer dogs galore. Most stands are allowed only one staff member in attendance [so that the royals are not ‘overcrowded.



The Royal Party then appears and are greeted by Keith Weed, the amusingly-named President of the Royal Horticultural Society. Dr Weed then escorts the royal party on a tour of inspection, taking in both the outside Show gardens and the various displays inside the ‘Great Pavilion’



When the Royal Party departs, the Chelsea Flower Show Gala takes over! This is a charity fund-raiser. Tickets are eye-wateringly expensive and aimed at wealthy bankers etc. The Royals have left by this time, although in the past, Princess Michael used to ‘stay on’ after the Royal visit and enjoy the champagne-fuelled fun



Tuesday and Wednesday of Chelsea Week are then open only to members of the Royal Horticultural Society, with the general public admitted for the final 3 days.
