What a wonderful honour for Meryl Streep :previous:

So I take it that the Infanta Sofía will be in Spain on her Mid Term Break?

No, her break is the week of Leonor's birthday.

This time they have made an exception, probably because this edition is very important for the family and they wanted her to also participate... everything indicates that it will be the last time that the King presides the awards and that starting next year Princess Leonor will preside them. Taking into account King Felipe's connection with the awards, and that they are held in Queen Letizia's hometown, saying goodbye is going to be very emotional for them and they will all want to be there.

I am curious about the setting going forward, who presided with Felipe when he was still unmarried, when did Sofia move up to the balcony?

At the age of 18, the Prince of Asturias began to preside the Awards alone.

Lula, what do you think about the possibility of Infanta Sofía joining her sister in the future, until Leonor is older? The King and Queen can't be with her because they outrank her and she can not preside an event if they are present, but her sister doesn't outrank her. Until this year the awards are presided by the King and Queen accompanied by the Princess and the Infanta, but next years the Awards could be presided by the Princess of Asturias accompanied by her sister, couldn't they?

I don't think it's a possibility, now that Leonor is officially going to be the heir she is the one who is going to star alone in certain events. We will see the path Sofía follows once she finishes high school and what her interests are.

So this time next year Leonor could be presenting the awards on her own!

Didn't Queen Sofia accompany Felipe always on the Prince of Asturias Awards until he was married? Perhaps they could do the same so that Queen Letizia accompanies her.

Maybe the mother and the grandmother together watching from the balcony?

Sofía attending was "stretching" protocol since she outranked Felipe until 2014. He couldn't preside over the ceremony in her presence but they played it as if Sofía was attending as any guest in the box, she wasn't sat at the presidency once JC stopped attending. For the same reason Letizia won't be sitting with Leonor but with the existing precedent she may attend with Sofía sr. I guess we'll see next years.

The Royal House has confirmed today that King Felipe and Queen Letizia will continue to accompany the Princess of Asturias to the Awards next year. The question was whether at 18 years old she would chair them completely alone, but it seems that it will be something progressive and that they do not want to overload her with so many events yet.

Prince Felipe presided the Awards alone for the first time in 1986 at the age of 18, his parents accompanied him the following year and from 1988 he presided alone. In those years the main event was the ceremony, and there were not so many events around it (there was no concert, nor so many audiences, nor an Exemplary Village award), nor were there so many international award winners or impact on the media.

Speech by Princess Leonor:

The Princess of Asturias gave a beautiful speech, where she revealed that she is aware of her role as heir to the throne: "I would like to be able to easily express what I feel on a day like today, here in Oviedo, after taking the oath of service to Spain before our flag just two weeks ago. And after having started my military training, which is allowing me to share continuous learning with people who have chosen a life of service with great demands and personal renunciations. In addition, on the 31st I will turn 18 years old and I will have the honor of swearing in the Constitution, with what that means for me personally and institutionally. What I can To tell you is that I understand very well and am aware of what my duty is and what my responsibilities entail."

Purely frivolous comment here but I am watching the ceremony and the PoA is so astonishingly pretty, confident , and composed.

Agree Saragli, the photos I've seen from this evening ceremony don't do her justice. In the video she looks beyond gorgeous.

The King gave a great speech, getting emotional at some point and making emphasis on his two daughters. I got the feeling he was bidding farewell to the event.

It would be interesting if at some point she would elaborate on what her understanding of her duty and responsibilities is. While I am sure she fully means what she says, it is rather vague at the same time.

I believe that many times actions are more important than words and at 17 years old, Princess Leonor has shown that she is perfectly aware of her responsibilities: she is carrying out her military training seriously and conscientiously prepares her events and speeches.

She knows how to behave and treat authorities, famous people and normal citizens with respect, she knows what it's like to attend events that are formal or relaxed, sad or happy, or what it's like to have to go to an event sick because people expect to see her.
