About Victoria and Daniel's visit to The Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Rights RFSL, magazine QX was there and interviewed Victoria and Daniel. Many photos too.
Crown Princess Victoria at RFSL: "We wanted to learn more and show our support"
On Wednesday, LGBTQ history was written when RFSL was visited by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel. The initiative for the visit was taken by the Crown Princess couple themselves. This was the first time ever that RFSL received a royal visit. QX Pär Jonasson was there and was the only media opportunity to ask a few questions.
There was a clear expectation and excitement in the air before the Crown Princess couple arrived, but once they stepped in through the door, the atmosphere almost instantly became familiar and relaxed.
A tour through the office where the various departments were presented, and the Crown Princess couple got to meet those responsible for, for example, asylum issues, crisis support, sports issues and the youth union. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel seemed very interested and asked many questions, and not surprisingly, the prince was perhaps a little extra curious about how RFSL works with diversity and inclusion in sports.
A longer lecture where, among other things, RFSL's union chairman Deirdre Palacios talked about RFSL's history and how to work today, with a little extra focus on the priority areas family, asylum, trans and the elderly. Deirdre began with the order:
- What if the 36 people who founded RFSL in an apartment in Solna in 1950 had known about this!
Yes a lot has certainly happened in the hbtqi area since then, but a lot still remains to be done. After a cup of delicious rainbow-colored macarons and a snazzy group photo shoot, the visit was over, and everyone involved seemed very pleased. QX took the opportunity to ask a few questions to the Crown Princess couple when they were on their way out.
How did you think the visit was?
Crown Princess Victoria: We are both very happy to make this visit, and think it was a very good presentation. Both a historical insight with important milestones, but also the very broad RFSL business. It is much wider than I thought. It feels very valuable to be here.
Was it something you heard today that surprised you?
Prince Daniel: In that case, positive, like focusing on the elderly. A generation that has lived in a time when it was seen as a disease to have a different sexual orientation, it was even banned in the past, to now see how there has been a huge shift in society and a kind of amends.
Crown Princess Victoria: Just pressing in this area and the loneliness that is unfortunately often means getting older. But it was also interesting to hear about the asylum and migration issues which are incredibly important. We also learned a bit about RFSL's international work, about their network in many countries. Sweden has nevertheless come a good bit and is a role model, and it feels good that we can join and support other countries that have not come this far.
Prince Daniel: But just because we have come a long way in an international comparison, we must not settle down. We must move forward the positions, work on the issues, spread knowledge and create norm shifts here too. Sweden still has people who are vulnerable and are treated in an extremely offensive and unfair way.
It was you yourself who took the initiative for this visit - how come you feel that LGBTQ issues are so important?
Crown Princess Victoria: Basically, it's all about human rights. We felt we wanted to learn more and show our support. So in that way it feels very good to come here.

Here, Victoria and Daniel strike a battle for everyone's right to love everyone.
Seven years ago, Crown Princess Victoria made a huge success with her speech at the QX Gala - and this week she and Prince Daniel, with great cheer, raise the LGBTQ issues again. A historical visit: This is the first time in Swedish history that the Royal House is paying attention to RFSL.
- People's equal value is a central issue for the Crown Princess couple, and now they wanted in-depth information about the organization and their activities for LGBTQ people, says Johan Tegel from the court's information department.
And so it became. Over a few cups of tea and a bunch of fluffy pastries, Victoria and Daniel got to meet the staff and hear more about RSFL, from their work to include young trans people in the sports world to the job of supporting older LGBTQ people.
RFSL also runs the project Sports for all bodies together with the Swedish Sports Federation, and Victoria and Daniel each received a sports jersey as a gift, complete with the trans flag and the text Sport for all bodies printed across the chest.
