the history nerd in me is cringing... : D
It actually depends on the Institution and their rules. Both History Detectives and back in the day FYI Roadshow covered that issue because sometimes the experts would wear gloves and other times not and the viewers were obviously confused. They follow the rules of the place they're at. If they say wear gloves to handle stuff, the gloves go on. If they give the go ahead to handle things w/out them, they do.
I'm sure Letitizia asked if she could touch the book w/out gloves. She's been to many events like this over the years and I'm sure she knows the protocols. If it wasn't fine, she wouldn't have done it.
