Wow. Charles is the spitting image of his great uncle Edward.

I think it is a rare photo that is not retouched or, these days, photoshopped however, I don't think it's an issue. HM is clearly not sitting square front on the chair. In fact she is sitting at quite an angle which would leave plenty of room for Charles hand to rest on the chair back.It does indeed looked photoshopped I'm not saying it is only that it lookits like that to me. Charles arm is strange it's not on the back of the chair not sure where it is. Anyway JMO if I can have one.
I believe you have really hit the nail on the head. It is rare to see such a royal photo and who needs yet another picture of robes and regailia. One thing we have with over 60 years of having HM on the throne is portraits in regalia and portraying her as the monarch and the same with Charles over the years and will continue into his years as a monarch also. Its kind of refreshing for a 90th birthday portrait to have it be representative of mother and son. Makes it much more memorable to me.
Duh. I just noticed the new portrait must have been taken at/before/after this (I think it was) birthday event? http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/12/22/01/34377E4E00000578-0-image-a-41_1482371839538.jpg

Anyone besides me notice that George III and Queen Elizabeth have very similar hairstyles?
I find this portrait very interesting as from a historical perspective, it covers the reign of the last monarch of the "colonies" of the New World until the present reign of the UK and the Commonwealth. Its mind boggling to think how so much has changed between the two reigns.
I like it.
