I think Royal Yacht Britannia should also have its own thread on TRF. The Royal Yacht Britannia is part of the history of the British monarchy and was used for decades by the Royal Family.

Thank you for posting these.:flowers:

I had seen the documentary before but it's very interesting. On this newsreel you can see Britannia between approx 1.48-3.20.

Not too long now before we have a replacement! Or at least a sort of semi-replacement. We should never have decommisioned Britannia without a replacement in the first place. Bad decision at the time .

Have they actually commissioned the new yacht or are they still talking about doing so? Have they started building it if it has been commissioned? It is probably five to ten years away given how long these things can take to build.

Not yet but it can't be long before they announce a competition.

I'd be surprised if it took the best part of a decade. I don't believe this government would have committed so publicly to the project if they didn't intend to follow through.

The yacht is an integral part of the new national shipbuilding strategy which also includes escorts for the RN. The RN is being recapitalised in the same way that the RAN is. With the same type 26 frigates as it happens (Hunter Class in Australia), along with the RCN (Canadian Surface Combatant).

If you're interested in the strategic context :

It's going to happen.

So it hasn't been commissioned.

10 years is a reasonable expectation. They will have to design it, then change the designe a few times etc.

Yes, as I said upthread. With links to explain the context of the UK's national shipbuilding strategy & the yachts place within its time frame.

Most mega yachts take three to four years to build. A highly complex machine like a nuclear sub would probably take a decade to construct but not a yacht built to commercial standards. That would be incredibly slow even allowing for the design stage.

The family has said they do not want it, it’s unlikely the people will be for it with the current bill for BP.

It isn't for the monarch. It isn't a royal yacht. It's purpose is the same as the vip government planes, they are used by government officials & senior members of the rf.

It will a boon for the shipyard that builds it. The completed yacht will be a showcase of British design & engineering.

Some countries have huge government plane fleets. The German one is enormous & incredibly expensive. The French & Italian vip plane fleets are also larger & more expensive than the UK's.

They do planes we (are hopefully going to do) yachts. Horses for courses as they say.

We're an island. It makes sense.

A fascinating film about the opening of the St Lawrence Seaway in 1959. I wasn't sure whether it should go in The Queen & Canada thread but it shows what a wonderful asset Britannia was. Such a gorgeous vessel in her prime.

American posters might be interested to see at 18.11 the Flag of the President of the United States flying alongside the Royal Standard.

fascinating indeed! Never seen it before. Thanks for posting!

Watching some of the videos we see how QEII, and Prince Phillip worked together as a team while receiving dignitaries in different rooms of this sea palace. They are like in the same state of mind in different parts of the ship.

I noticed William and Katherine would probably continue this style of work more than King Charles with Queen Camilla. Maybe the age has a lot to do with it since the Queen and Prince Phillip were younger when assuming the throne than Charles and Camilla.

The Queen and Prince Philip were emotional as they watched the decommissioning of the Royal Yacht Britannia (1997):
