It has happened before. At least in 2014 at the state visit of the President of Mozambique the state dinner was held in Áras an Uachtaráin, as was also in 2015 at the state visit of the President of Germany and also in 2017 at the state visit of the President of Croatia.

It was black tie and the 1st ever State Visit from the UK to Ireland,the Swedish King and Queen had a black tie honour back in 1992 under President Mary Robinson.

Management and staff at Ericsson Athlone were treated to a royal visit this morning when King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden visited the company's Athlone campus.
The Swedish royals were welcomed by senior vice president of Ericsson, Jan Karlsson, and Deputy Sean Canney, chairperson of the Mobile Phone and Broadband Task Force, as well as a host of key industry figures and local representatives.
The visit gave Ericsson the opportunity to showcase its 5G technology at the Athlone campus, one of the key global centres for Ericsson’s Operation Support System (OSS) which plays an important component of 5G.
The event was hailed as "hugely significant" in highlighting both the contributions of the company on a global scale, and the strategic importance of Athlone and the Midlands region.

The banquet for the coming State Visit from the Netherlands will be at "the presidential palace" (Áras an Uachtaráin) as well. I think this president simply has a more sober preference than his predecessors.

At the press conference before departure, the king told he has been in Ireland many times.
- The country has undergone a fantastic change. Sweden and Ireland have the same history of emigration and many things that bind us together.
Has the royal couple been in this area before?
- No, not right here. But I have been on the west coast, a little north. Sometime in the 1960s, I was a guest at Lord Mountbatten. It's a long story. I was there and Prince Charles must also have been there and we fished every day in the sea, says the king.
The state visit included, among other things, sustainable agriculture.
Does the King take some ideas for his own farming?
- It's so different, it can't. No, in Sweden the cows must be indoors the winter, so it is completely different conditions.
When Queen Silvia received a question from a local journalist if she is proud of Greta Thunberg, the climate activist who has also led Ireland's pupils to school strike, she replied:
- I think it is an exciting movement and that it is amazing that so many people listen to her. Young people who show us what we must do. She is a wonderful voice in the debate. And yes, I admire her.
The queen is impressed by Greta Thunberg?
- Yes, I am impressed by how many people listen to her, and that she speaks plainly. I think it is good that we become aware and do what we can to take care of nature.
The king also had to taste the local beer.
- It is nothing you drink with the food, but it fits like a drink.
