The National Health and Welfare Festival (Nenlynpic) is for participants age 60 and over. This year, 32 events including tennis, chanbara, haiku, and mahjong were held over four days. Princess Akiko talked about her grandparents' longevity, mentioning Prince Mikasa "listened to the doctor's advice often, never ate and drank too much, did exercises that he had devised himself, and lived a regular and disciplined life. I think that was the secret. We hope that everyone who participates in the Nenlynpic will challenge various things with curiosity like His Imperial Highness, and spend a fulfilling time interacting with many people of all generations."

Her grandparents enjoyed many activities together, such as golf, dance, tai chi, and haiku. Akiko recently found a photograph of her grandfather folk dancing. He promoted folk dancing and was appointed president of the Japan Recreation Association in 1951. Also known as "Prince of Recreation" and until his later years, he was full of curiosity and challenged various things, such as starting dance lessons. After turning 70, he started using a word processor and practicing Japanese dance."

On December 1st, Princess Akiko gave an interview to Yomiuri Shimbun ahead of the publication of Prince Mikasa's biography on December 15.

Photos: Yomiuri, Yomiuri2, Yomiuri3

Summary:
- Prince Mikasa, as a historian, opposed the movement to revive Kigensetsu (February 11), which had been a public holiday before the war, as the day of the enthronement of the first Emperor Jinmu since the 1st Emperor is considered mythological, lacking evidence.
- Princess Yuriko took February 11 (Kigensetsu) lightly, quipping that's the birthday of their second son Yoshihito (Prince Katsura) so many people will be flocking to see him.
- some details from staff diaries recording his childhood: father Emperor Taisho visited a nap time; mother Empress Teimei attended bath time.
- since children were raised apart from their parents at the time, Prince Mikasa doesn't recall his father's voice and viewed his mother more as the Empress than a mother figure.
- Prince Mikasa was very happy Akiko became a researcher. He told her father Prince Tomohito, "This is the greatest achievement since Jimmu" when she got her doctorate.
- Akiko was equally happy to be recognized because "There was a time when I wondered if what I was doing had any meaning."
- Prince Mikasa often photographed his wife

Biography illustrates Prince Mikasa’s 100-year life - The Japan News
[...]

Prince Mikasa served as an officer in the Imperial Japanese Army during the prewar and war periods, and worked as a historian in the postwar period. The biography, published by Yoshikawa Kobunkan, describes the prince’s century-long life, which spanned the Taisho, Showa and Heisei eras. The book also contains 11 interviews about him with Princess Yuriko, to whom he was married for 75 years.

Talking about her wartime memories, Princess Yuriko mentioned an event that occurred on Aug. 14, 1945. Prince Mikasa, who wanted the war to end, and a young army officer who insisted that the war continue had a heated discussion in front of a bomb shelter at Prince Mikasa’s residence. Princess Yuriko recalled: “They were so tense that they seemed on the verge of shooting each other. I remember that the atmosphere was very scary.”

When Prince Mikasa tried to head for the Imperial Palace to see Emperor Showa, he was stopped by the young officer. That same night, an attempted military coup occurred at the Imperial Palace. “If Prince Mikasa had been there, he would have been in big trouble,” she said.

The biography was compiled by a publishing committee comprised of historians and others, working since February 2021. Princess Akiko, the granddaughter of Prince Mikasa, chaired the committee. The 1,332-page biography also uses unreleased documents such as 162 daily logs recorded by personal staff, including a nanny for little Prince Mikasa, and a diary kept by the prince himself during his service in the military to describe the details of his life from his childhood through the war.

Tokyo-np's interview with Princess Akiko about the biography of Prince Mikasa

Some similar info as interview with Yomiuri in December, see post 634

New/other info:
- deep remorse for WWII
- In 1943, Prince Mikasa was dispatched to Nanjing, China, as a staff officer of the General Headquarters of the Chinese Expeditionary Force. He searched for a solution to the quagmire of the Sino-Japanese War, but was shocked to learn of the atrocities committed by the Japanese military.
- Before returning to Japan in 1944, he gave a lecture to the executives of the General Headquarters, which became a document titled "Reflections as a Japanese on the China Incident." It criticized the military, saying, "What Japanese people, especially military personnel, lack are 'introspection' and 'modesty'."
- reflecting on his 1 year in China, "It was during this year that my beliefs were shaken to the very core. I was astonished at the reality of what is called a 'holy war.'"
- after the war, he became a researcher of the history of the ancient Orient and taught at multiple universities and promoted recreational activities, such as folk dance
- Akiko credits her grandfather for her career path, "he sowed the seeds of my interest in learning"
- Princess Yuriko wanted to create a book that even the general public would want to pick up and read. That's why Princess Akiko tried to use many photos, include episodes of Prince Mikasa's daily life to create a biography that properly conveys his personality throughout.
- Akiko is amazed her grandfather kept working into old age. He was 78 on his last visit to Turkey. She didn't fully register his age until later, taking his good health for granted as a child.
- Regarding recreational activities, Akiko thinks her grandfather was motivated by his strong desire for peace.
- Akiko hardly ever heard of Nanjing from Prince Mikasa. Once, a guest asked him about Nanjing and Prince Mikasa strongly denied it. His tone was such that Akiko felt she should not ask.
- Despite his painful experience, as a historian, Akiko regrets not asking more.
- The war must have been painful for Princess Yuriko as well, "but she takes it indifferently and never feels depressed."
- Akiko heard about the August 14, 1945 heated argument before. The first time was during a visit with Princess Yuriko when she was staying in Karuizawa.
- Akiko didn't hear about Kigensetsu (National Foundation Day) directly from her grandfather. She understands his opposition to revive Kigensetsu because "it would not be good to state something that cannot be proved as if it were a fact."
- Prince Mikasa never wavered in his convictions despite criticism, even from the military.
- In his later years, he had a chronic disease called "mitral valve insufficiency," and was strict about his salt intake. Example: if the daily salt limit was 10g, then he'd take exactly 10g.
- he weighed himself morning and evening
- Prince Mikasa followed doctors' instructions closely
- Akiko's aunt learned folk dance from Prince Mikasa
- releasing his nursery rhymes, kimonos, stationery, poems, etc. brings people closer to the Imperial family

It's true! Princess Yōko's (or Yohko's) activities are very difficult to find, perhaps because the Princess often interacts with disabled people and prefers to put them at ease without cameras? Anyway yes, the photo of the Princess in pink has been used in the family tree (it's there again this year).

Yes, the newer pink suit photo has been used on the IHA family tree since late 2021. Photo may have existed earlier but unreleased. I assume royals have periodic photo sessions.

Private activities are understandable but she has other non-disability events as well. Besides the usual lack of media coverage for extended Imperial family, it's probably unfair to compare Yohko to her sister and mother who have more patronages, opportunities for public appearances. Akiko also has various academic positions and promotes her cultural organization Shinyusha.
