June 6 - Sweden's National Day (2010-2024)

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Crown Princess Victoria held her national day speech in Haga Park. A declaration of love for Sweden's nature - and a call to preserve it.
- I am so grateful for all these wonderful nature experiences, each one of them a memory for life, said the Crown Princess about the province hikes she has done throughout Sweden.
She wore a floral dress by Swedish fashion designer Karin Rodebjer. A dress she appeared in earlier this year, on the trip to Vietnam.
The speech became a tribute to Sweden's flora and fauna.
Something that Victoria got to experience close up during the province hikes she started in the fall of 2017.
- It has been an absolutely magical experience. During these two years I have seen so many pages of Sweden's nature. I have walked on pilgrim paths, in old woods, meadows and towns. I have been skiing over mountains and rivers, paddling, cycling and riding, said the Crown Princess.
- I have learned more about how our ecosystems work and how incredibly fragile they are. I am so grateful for all these wonderful nature experiences, each one of them a memory of life. I have had another unforgettable impression from all the people I met along the way.
- All of you who are committed to protecting and caring for our nature, so that more people can take part of what Sweden often has around the knot, you do a sumptuous job and deserve a warm thanks. Thanks.
- Our society is based on a human view that gives all people equal value and the same conditions for using their rights. All this is easily taken for granted. But it is enough that we look at the news flow to be reminded of the places where brave people risk the lives of the same rights, said the Crown Princess.
She finished her speech with:
- Now I wish you a continued fine national day here in Haga Park, thank you.
Kungligt firande på flera håll under nationaldagen

The Crown Princess's speeches always read to me as unpretentious and practical but impactful. As always, thank you for the good translations.

I've always liked Princess Sofia. In the beginning she used to get very bad press, I'm glad that has changed for the better.

In Sweden, at least, Sofia Hellqvist received overwhelmingly good press, especially in tabloids such as Svensk Damtidning, from the beginning of her relationship with Prince Carl Philip. The future husbands of his sisters received markedly more negative press.

What happened to all the royal children? Suddenly there is just Estelle and Oscar, what about Carl philip and sophia's children and Madeleine and Chris's?

To add to the answers above, Prince Carl Philip's children are only toddlers, and I am not sure it is expected of them to be involved in official events even when they are of age. The chairman of the parliamentary constitutional committee suggested last year that in order to contain the public costs of the royal house, the roster of working royals should be delimited to children of the king and crown princess and their spouses.

I agree that it would be nice to see the other children at National Day though perhaps next year Madeleine's children will attend as the comment about Nicolas and Leonore being ill sounds like Madeleine intended for them to attend a National Day event.
Still; it was lovely to see Estelle and Oscar there and the official photos are as adorable as ever! Estelle is really growing and she reminds me a lot of Madeleine for some reason. Oscar is a clone of Daniel - nice to see him smiling too.

We have now seen in last two years king Carl Gustaf and queen Silvia at a photoshoot at Logården with the crown princess family before the cortege leaves to Skansen. Obviously the king has decided that this is the way it is done.
About the children being at the cortege, the swedish press has told that when Estelle was small, Ewa and Olle Westling were at a car at the back of the cortege and took Estelle home before the cortege arrived to the concert at Skansen. Perhaps it is now the same thing with Oscar. If Carl Philip's and Madeleine's children would be at the cortege, more cars would be needed to take them home, there would be nannies and/or grandparents taking them home. Estelle attended the concert the first time last year when she was six years old. I don't think that after five years when Adrienne is six, we see fifteen members of the royal family at the concert.

The concert at Skansen with part of the cortege in the beginning and the Tapto in the end of the video can be seen on SVT play until 6th July.
The Armed Music Corps playing at Logården and the Tapto starts at 1.29.00, and as every year, the royal family comes when the Band has played some marches:

The royal family's historical tradition is broken - no national day celebration at Skansen

The royal family traditionally tend to be guests of honor in the audience during the celebration of the National Day at Skansen.
But this will not be the case this year - celebrations with crowds at Skansen will be canceled and the royal family will not be present at Solliden scene.
National Day is one of the most important celebrations of the year for the royal family. Alongside the Nobel party on December 10 in Stockholm City Hall and Crown Princess Victoria's birthday on July 14, June 6 is counted as a major important day for the royal house.
But this year's National Day will look completely different given the trials the country is going through because of the corona pandemic.
The Swedish National Day Foundation is responsible for the official National Day celebration, and has decided that there will be no celebration at Skansen with the public this year. SVT will nevertheless broadcast a TV program from the Solliden scene with flag raising, solemn speeches, fan surrender, national anthem and artist performances.
“The foundation and its chairman, Speaker of the Riksdag Andreas Norlén, believe that the implementation, as usual at Solliden on the Skansen, with the participation of the royal family, government, parliament and foreign ambassadors and representatives of authorities and organizations and the general public, needs to seek other forms this year. Unfortunately, no audience on the spot is possible", Martin Brothén, secretary general of the Swedish National Day Foundation, writes in an e-mail.
The royal family usually goes from the Royal Palace to the Skansen and takes part in the live broadcast from Solliden's stage - so it will not be this year. But viewers can still expect the royal family to participate from a distance.
- Parts of the royal family will be involved during the broadcast, but they will not physically be at Skansen due to the recommendations and restrictions from the Public Health Agency, says Margareta Thorgren.
For the royal family, the national day usually starts with the opening of the Royal Ppalace, and then the day is packed with visits and program points. Members of the royal family usually go out in the country to join the National Day celebrations. The day is rounded off with a televised celebration from Skansen, where a festive and star-studded concert takes place with the royal representatives on the first parquet.
How will the royal family's national day celebration look like this year?
- It won't look as usual. It is usually celebrated at Skansen and afterwards reception at the Royal Palace - it will not be like that, says Margareta Thorgren and continues:
- We have a plan A, but we plan based on several scenarios. There are changes all the time, we follow the authorities. We have a planning where we are flexible. Gathering around National Day and celebrating our country is perhaps more important than ever. At the same time, it is a state of emergency, for which one must take the highest responsibility.
Kungafamiljens historiska tradition bryts – inget nationaldagsfirande på Skansen

The King and Queen have not been to Stockholm since the middle of March. But now they are on their way back.
On Saturday next week, the king and queen sit in the car and drive the twelve miles from Stenhammar Castle and into Stockholm. And it will be the first time in eleven weeks.
- Yes, that's right, and that's because of the National Day celebration, says Margareta Thorgren.
- The royal couple has not moved from Stenhammar during this period, but now they plan to be in Stockholm.
- The celebration at Skansen will follow the tradition in the parts where possible, and the king will participate with a brief speech from the Royal Palace.
Will other parts of the royal family also be in place at Royal Palace?
- No, we are following the recommendations of the Public Health Agency. So only the royal couple.
And what about the Tapto in the evening, will it be done?
- Yes, it will be a traditional tapto, so it is planned.
Kungaparet lämnar Stenhammar – för Stockholm _ Svensk Dam

The king and queen leave the quarantine at Stenhammar Castle. In connection with the National Day, they go to Stockholm.
- It will be a different celebration this year. They are at the Palace only during the day, says Margareta Thorgren.
Digital job meetings, dog walks and video calls with children and grandchildren. They take turns walking with dog Brandie.
For the king and queen, life is different during corona times, where they have been isolated at Stenhammar Castle outside Flen.
Only the royal couple live at Stenhammar with the king's aide-de-camp nearby. All to protect them from the corona virus.
On Friday, however, it was clear that his majesty and Silvia - for a day - leave the quarantine. On National Day, June 6, they go to the Royal Palace.
The king will not take part in the celebration at Skansen, but will receive The Royal Swedish Army Band that plays traditional tapto at Logården in the evening.
- The royal couple is just over the day at the Palace. On the evening of National Day, they return to the quarantine at Stenhammar, says Margareta Thorgren.
- It will be a different national day celebration for them. On the other hand, the royal couple and the royal family are trying to pay attention and celebrate the day this year, which is perhaps more important than ever.
The National Day celebration is broadcast in Sweden's Television. In this broadcast, the king and queen participate. No one else in the royal family is present.
- The restrictions still apply, and they are of course followed in the future, explains Margareta Thorgren.
Did you discuss back and forth how you would do?
- It has been a planning with different scenarios and alternatives. All the time, the recommendations of the Public Health Agency have been followed, and the travel restriction is two hours. They can drive to the Royal Palace.
It takes an hour and a half from Stenhammar Castle to Stockholm.
Kungen och drottningen lämnar karantänen på Stenhammar

That´s rather poor comparing to Norway´s National Day this May - I mean, Sweden had much less lockdown (there wasn´t actually any in Sweden!) and distancing rules than Norway or Denmark...!

Could the King and Queen not also be in quaratine at Drottninghilm instead of Stenhammar. Would be much closer to Stockholm.

That´s rather poor comparing to Norway´s National Day this May - I mean, Sweden had much less lockdown (there wasn´t actually any in Sweden!) and distancing rules than Norway or Denmark...!
Contrary to what many foreigners believe Sweden does have quite stringent distancing recommendations. Like all Swedes over the age of 70 the King & Queen have been advised to isolate themselves from interactions with people outside of the family group.

Could the King and Queen not also be in quaratine at Drottninghilm instead of Stenhammar. Would be much closer to Stockholm.

Yes, they could. But the king and queen have during the years spent more and more of their free time in Stenhammar Castle. King Carl Gustaf had always dreamed of becoming a farmer. "Something in forestry and agriculture" he himself has expressed it several times. And in Stenhammar he can do just that.
King Carl Gustaf said at his speech in Stenhammar last year:
"For the Queen and me, Stenhammar is a second home"
and on the Stenhammar Day in 2013
"Yes, Stenhammar is a piece of the earth where I also feel that I belong to in a very special way."

The Swedish National Day Foundation is also responsible for the official national day celebration this year.
With the trials that the country, together with an entire world, is going through, this year's National Day celebration will be both special and important.
The foundation and its chairman, Speaker of the Riksdag Andreas Norlén, believe that the celebration, which is usually held at Skansen, with the participation of the royal family, the government, parliament and foreign ambassadors and representatives of authorities and organizations and the public, need to seek other forms this year.
Unfortunately, no audience on site is possible.
However, we look forward to being able to achieve a worthy national day celebration at Skansen this year, which can be followed by the TV broadcast (SVT1 and SVT Play) regarding the ceremonies with flag raising, solemn speeches, fan handover, national song and artist performances.
In this way, we can all together and close pay attention to and celebrate our national day this year, even if we are allowed to keep a physical distance to each other.
We look forward to being able to have with the royal couple, the prime minister and the Speaker in the broadcast. Prime Minister Stefan Löfven gives this year's speech.
At the program, with the program leaders Anne Lundberg and Tara Moshizi, will also participate The Royal Swedish Army Band and artists from all over the country.
National Day and the broadcast traditionally concludes with a tapto from the Royal Palace with The Royal Swedish Army Band.

What a great surprise to get these photos already today, I was expecting them tomorrow morning.

Obviously because the king doesn't wear a folk costume, Daniel and Carl Philip don't wear it either. We have seen Daniel at the Ockelbo costume when he and Victoria visited Ockelbo in 2011, the folk costumes were a wedding gift to them.

I prefer the king's choice, that the men don't wear folk costumes. Daniel looks great at his suit with the little swedish flag.

That's cute. Just a pity that somehow the Swedish royals always leave it to the women and children to dress in folk costumes and don't have the men participate.

I especially like the one with Estelle and Oscar posing under the tree.

I think it's a shame that the royal men don't wear the traditional folk costumes which can be used even at formal Royal white tie galas.

I agree. I'd say either you have both wear the folk costumes or neither. The Norwegians picked 'both'; many royal house pick 'neither' but Sweden has this in-between version where the women are supposed to parade in folk costumes while the men don't bother to do the same. It feels a bit as if the men are 'above that' but are happy to 'show' their wives and children in folk costumes. I'm sure it isn't intended that way but still...

Finally little Oscar in his traditional outfit. Very cute.

A shame the royal men dont. Daniel looks out of place in his suit. I doubt the King would stop him from wearing his traditional outfit.

I like how in Norway we see Haakon in his. Although Sverre has stopped wearing his. In Denmark while not the Danish outfit it was lovely to see all of the CP family while visiting the Faroe Islands and Greenland with their traditional outfits.

It will be a slimmed national day celebration with the royal family this year.
But those who want to get a glimpse of the Palace can get a guided tour of Crown Princess Victoria - on social media.
- Those who had been looking forward to coming to Royal Palace can at least visit the castle digitally, says Johan Tegel at the court's information department.
Tomorrow is Sweden's National Day. Then the royal family are usually in focus, but since the situation is as it is, there are a lot of changes in the traditions.
The royal couple, Carl XVI Gustav and Silvia, have been in a kind of quarantine at Stenhammar castle in Sörmland since March.
Both are over 70 years of age and thus in the corona virus risk group. On National Day in honor, however, they go to Stockholm throughout the day.
At the Palace, the king will record a television speech, without audience, which SVT broadcasts in the evening. The tradition of The Royal Swedish Army Band's great tapto from Logården at the Palace remains, but it becomes a very small audience. Only the royal couple, Speaker of the Riksdag Andreas Norlén and Prime Minister Stefan Löfven are in place.
We others can watch the television broadcast in the evening. This year the king and queen do not go to Skansen in the evening, as they usually do.
- The royal family will not participate in Skansen, says Johan Tegel.
Traditionally, the Palace has "open house" on National Day with activities for all visitors. This is not the case this year. Instead, Crown Princess Victoria will showcase selected parts of the Palace on Facebook and Instagram.
- It is usually a member of the royal family who opens the Palace and welcomes the visitors. The Crown Princess has instead chosen to open the Palace digitally and showcase some of the halls, says Johan Tegel.
According to information to Aftonbladet, Daniel, Estelle and little Oscar will appear next to Victoria.
- Never before have you seen so much of Estelle and Oscar. The whole family really offers themselves, says a person with insight in the production.
But the court does not want to reveal any details about the tour.
- We must return to that. But this is a reduced celebration this year, says Johan Tegel.

But now everyone is wondering why Prince Daniel has a dark suit? Why shouldn't we see him in province costume?
This is how information officer Johan Tegel from the court answers :
- The tradition does not look so simple. In adulthood, the men in the Royal Family do not usually wear national costume, even if it has happened.
- Prince Daniel has an Ockelbo costume, which he is proud of and which he has worn before. But when shooting was done for National Day, the Crown Princess family wore costumes from their duchies.

Tomorrow is National Day and Victoria has already started the celebration together with Estelle and Oscar in national costume!.
Estelle has turned eight and Oscar is four, and previously we have only seen them in the blue and yellow Sweden costume.
But now they have got new nice costumes sewn and the choice was both difficult and easy. Of course, Estelle's costume would come from her Duchy of Östergötland. But then there are many parishes and costumes to choose from.
Finally, it was a summer costume from Skedevi, located in the municipality of Finspång, a few miles north of Norrköping.
The same goes for Prince Oscar, Skåne's own mini-duke. It became a costume from Ingelstad herded - and Ingelstad is a town located just south of Växjö.
The duchies plays a clear role in the royal family's life, and when it was time for Princess Estelle to do her young life's first royal assignment at the age of two, Linköping was the obvious choice.
Duke Oscar was a little more discreet when he made his entry into Skåne, it actually happened completely incognito. But then Victoria offered some great pictures from the big day.
Victoria herself wears her Vadsbro costume in the pictures, and she has had it ever since she was in her teens.

Estelle & Oscar are adorable in their traditional attire. Estelle is tall. Cute pictures.

I do wish the Swedish men would wear the costumes. Sorry but its one day a year. You can wear your suit other days. The women do it.

I love that Victoria and the kids are wearing outfits from their duchies. Such a wonderful touch :flowers:

Its also nice seeing different costumes from various regions. Not the standard blue and yellow we normally see.

Estelle sure is getting tall. Such sweet photos of them all.

The King and Queen will also be present at the Royal Palace on the occasion of National Day. They come from Stenhammar, back and forth throughout the day, but even though it is the first time in two and a half months they are in Stockholm. so they will not meet their children and grandchildren, says Margareta Thorgren to Svensk Damtidning:
- No, they won't.
Not even outdoors?
- No, not even that.

The second part of the guided tours, The Bernadotte Galleries. Victoria tells at the video that the King's traditional National Day reception is held there and right at this place where we are standing, was our wedding cake on 19th June 2010. And she tells that she likes very much of the portrait of Gustaf V, and the portrait of queen Sofia by Anders Zorn.

The third part of the guided tours, The Cabinet Meeting Room. Victoria tells that the Councils of State are held there, and that she thinks they are important, she gets informed about what is happening in Sweden and abroad, in various topics. Museum teacher Per Sjödahl tells that at Gustav III's time the room was his dining room, and the guests were invited to watch when the royal family was eating.

The fourth part of the guided tours, The Karl XI's gallery. Victoria says that it is beautiful today when it is empty, but it is especially beautiful when there is an official dinner of a state visit. Then there is a long table where about 170 guests can sit and enjoy of the dinner.

The fifth and last part of the guided tours: Logården, the Royal Palace's garden. Victoria says that she knows this place since she lived at the Royal Palace until she was four years old, and she had a sandbox in that corner. Logården is not used so much, but on the National Day the Armed Forces' traditional Tapto is organized there. Museum teacher Per Sjödahl says that they are often asked, which is the main façade of the Palace. But there isn't one, we are having four main façades. In the end Victoria says that she hopes that you have had nice moments with us here and very fine National Day. Thank you!

What a nice idea! Thank you Lady Finn, for bringing this to the forums attention!

A sandbox in the royal park must be funny for a kid! Makes me wonder, how the Crown Princess felt about it. Since when does she understand, that she will be Queen one day? And since when have kids an idea, what a princess is? Did she say something about it - in the vids or somewhere else?

Great question. It reminds me of princess Amalia who wanted to be a princess (the Disney version) later in life -according to then princess Máxima- when she was 3 1/2 years old.

Estelle's dress, is that a variant of the national dress, or does it belong to a particular part of Sweden?

It is so called Sweden dress (Sverigedräkt), Swedish National Costume, which the royal women wear on the National Day celebrations. We saw it on Victoria today at the videos. Queen Silvia wore it for the first time at the National Day celebrations in 1983, it was the first time the day was called National day, prior to that it was called Swedish Flag Day. There are versions for children and young girls too. Estelle has got a bigger version, because she has grown so much.
