2023 will be an exciting year for royal fans. King Carl XVI Gustaf celebrates 50 years on the throne and Queen Silvia turns 80.
The preparations have been going on for about three years. Next year will be a jubilee year for the Bernadotte family.
- It starts with us paying attention to the jubilee on our website on January 1, says Margareta Thorgren.
Several documentaries about the King are done, which have also involved a certain amount of planning on the part of the court. SF releases a documentary about the King in Sweden's cinemas, a film made by Karin af Klintberg, who has followed the King for several years.
The start of the jubilee will be at the traditional Sweden Dinner, which will now begin with a concert in the Hall of State at the Royal Palace. (..)

Is the King wearing the collars of the 4 Swedish royal orders? He seems to be wearing a Danish order badge around the neck though.

Yes he is wearing the 4 Collars of the Orders of the Seraphim, Sword, Polar Star and Vasa, The stars of the Order of the Seraphim and the Order of Vasa, and the Beck badge of the danish Order of Dannebrog.

This year, the king has been on the throne for 50 years. Guest in the "Kulturprogrammet Sverige!" program is Expressen's former court reporter and nowadays Svensk Damtidning's editor-in-chief Johan T Lindwall, who has covered the royal family for many years (he is 51 years old and has followed Victoria since she was 15 years old and made Victoria's first official interview when she was 18 years old). Does he regret something he wrote? Film director Karin af Klintberg wants to show who the king really is in a new documentary. In addition, it is 500 years since Gustav Vasa's coronation. In Strängnäs, they are gearing up for a thunderous jubilee. Program manager: Fredrik Önnevall.

Lindwall says that he doesn't publish everything he knows about the royal family and that the king is investigated quite much in Sweden, the apanage and everything. Lindwall says that sometimes for instance at a state visit he must ask the unpleasant questions and he knows that the king will become very annoyed and bad-tempered but he must ask the questions. He wouldn't have write things what are in "The reluctant monarch", he doesn't write about infidelity, it is not appropriate and not good journalism. Well, Lindwall is the editor-in-chief and doesn't write articles himself but decides what is published. Lindwall says that he thinks the royal family was happy when he became the editor-in-chief in Svensk Damtidning and isn't that tight reporter of Expressen anymore. Lindwall claims that they are on the royal family's side at Svensk Damtidning. They have two big events in a year: The Nobel Prize and Victoria's birthday. Lindwall says that nothing can crack the swedish monarchy now, the king is very popular now and when Victoria becomes the queen she will be at least as popular. This Jubilee year will make the monarchy stronger, as all the royal family celebrations, weddings, christenings always do.
Karin af Klintberg has done the new documentary "The King". Parts of the documentary are shown at her interview. She tells that she was doing another project in India when the king was on a state visit there, she saw the king and thought she has seen the king whole her life but she doesn't know anything about him. The king isn't an easy person to interview, he doesn't like interview situations, he would like to be at the woods with his dog. The king was polite and answered Karin's questions but didn't want to let her into his life. Karin still wonders why the king said yes to the documentary. Also the producer of the documentary, Stina Gardell, is interviewed.
In the end of the program they tell about the celebration of Gustav Vasa was crowned the king of Sweden 500 years ago.

I doubt that the Royal family is happy about anything when it comes to Johan's work. He represents the worst kind of tabloid "journalism" available in Sweden and while the magazine was on a slippery slide down in to the gutter already before he became it's editor he's made sure to complete that descent.

That's interesting, but also a bit sad. I was hoping that Karin had managed to get close enough to the King for him to let us in behind his facade, but unfortunately it seems she didn't. A missed opportunity, but not a surprise. I do think that the King wants to invite us in to a certain extent, but is unable to.

On September 15, 1973, King Gustav VI Adolf passed away and that is also the culmination of the jubilee year. It was the day the King took office and this weekend we will focus a little more on, says Thogren.
A big dinner at the Royal Palace is planned for September 15. It also happens to be Daniel's birthday, he turns 50 on the same day. Thorgren says that the focus will be on the jubilee on September 15. Daniel's birthday is celebrated on another occasion.

What a coincidence

When H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf celebrates 50 years on the throne, the people of Sörmland are invited to a party in Nyköping. Södermanland gets to start the King and Queen's county visits during the jubilee year 2023 with the official visit to the Residence City Nyköping on February 9 with the County Governor as host.
The King and Queen will have several opportunities to meet the county's residents. The royal couple arrives in Nyköping at 10.00 where the Governor receives them. The visit begins at Sörmland's museum and is followed by a lunch at Nyköpingshus for invited guests. After that, entertainment awaits at Stora torget at around 14.00. More information about the day's program to come.

King and Queen gave a Swedish dinner to pay attention to people who have made significant contributions to Sweden locally, regionally or nationally. The dinner also began the jubilee year 2023, which marks HM the King's 50 years on the throne as well as the 500th anniversary of the election of Gustav Vasa as King of Sweden.
The dinner began with a divertissement in the Hall of State where singers and musicians offered a musical journey with music from the 16th century to the present day. Among others, court singer Elin Rombo and opera singer Joachim Bäckström sang at the evening's divertissement. The speaker was Professor Mattias Lundberg.
The concert ended with the Royal Swedish Army Band performing a newly written commemorative march. The march, composed by Erik Berndalen, was the Headquarters Military Music Department's gift to the King.
After the divertissement, the approximately 200 guests were greeted by the King and Queen, the Crown Princess Couple and the Prince Couple in Lovisa Ulrika's dining room in the Bernadotte apartments.

The Sweden Dinner offered its guests an unforgettable evening at the Palace.
One of the guests was Helena Timbäck Tranquist, spinning instructor and former operations manager for Friskis and Svettis in Örebro.
- It felt honorable to be noticed in this way and to participate in this context, she says today.
There were no handshakes with the royals for the guests. Since the pandemic, the royals and especially the royal couple have been restrictive with handshakes. But Helena could exchange a few words with Sofia after dinner.
- We ran into Sofia and took the opportunity to say thank you so much on the way out. The royal family are very nice and accessible. They mingled among us invited in a very relaxed way, they really have a nice attitude. It was great fun and a very pleasant and easygoing atmosphere that you managed to achieve. It was relaxed but still very festive and solemn.
Helena was very impressed by the dishes, it was tasty, well composed and a light fresh meal for a context like this. The artichoke ice cream and dessert was a favorite, it was fantastically good, she liked it and it was very exciting and innovative.
Farmer Carl Gudmundsson was with his fiancee Beatrice Björklund one of the guests. He says that the evening exceeded his expectations.
- It was really super sumptuous, just as you expect a Sweden Dinner to be. We had high expectations, but they were met with flying colors. We were very impressed by how interested, not only the royal family was, but everyone at court. You feel proud as a Swede to be represented by the royal family and the work they do.

Last week at TV4's News morning was a lot of talk about the Jubilee year.
On Monday:
The director of the court's information department Margareta Thorgren and court expert Claes-Johan Larsson discussed about the year.
Margareta Thorgren says that this will be a very exciting year and she is happy about two things: that Sweden is celebrating 500 years as free state and that the King has been the Head of state for 50 years. There is a lot to celebrate and highlight Sweden, what has happened in 500 years and in the King's 50 years on the throne. Claes-Johan Larsson says about the royal couple's county visits that they are important, very appreciated by the counties and an old tradition. Thorgren says that the county visits are a folk festival and they hope that everyone comes out to celebrate. Larsson says that the Royal Family's status and popularity is quite unchanged according to the surveys. Thorgren says that the Royal House doesn't do any own surveys but they follow the surveys done by others.
In the end Anders Pihlblad asks that Daniel turns 50 years on the day of the big Jubilee, how do they resolve this? Thorgren says: It is very special, 15 September, it was when the king took office in 1973 and Prince Daniel turns 50 on the same day. It will be celebrated but it will perhaps be celebrated a little, a little later.

In 1973, King Carl XIV Gustaf ascended the throne. Tonight, the "Jubilee year 2023" begins with a Sweden dinner in the King's honor. Representatives from all of Sweden's counties are invited. And the whole party ends on the weekend of September 15-16. Then it is exactly 50 years since he became king - which means big procession through the capital. Elisabeth Tarras-Wahlberg, former Marshal of the Court, and journalist Ebba von Sydow summarize the King's time on the throne.
ETW says that on his Jubilee year, the King looks back what he has achieved. But he looks also into the future, what he still wants to do. ETW and Ebba on Sydow have both chosen a favourite moment of the King's 50 years on the throne. ETW chose the King's 50th birthday, when the King came to the courtyard of the Royal Palace and was very surprised about how big crowd of people there was. ETW says that the King had got into the background, there had been wedding, a new queen and children. But on that day he saw, that people liked him too. Ebba von Sydow chose the King's interest in sports, for instance at the Olympics in 2012. The people love to see how enthusiastically the King supports swedish athletes in various sports events. ETW points also out that the King loves to go out with his dog, to be alone at the woods. Ebba says that she doesn't see any reason the King would quit at his job and ETW says: A Swedish king dies at his post.

Many royals have visited Kinnekulle over the years and this year when Carl XVI Gustaf celebrates 50 years on the throne and together with Queen Silvia will visit all the country's counties, Götene municipality has sent an invitation to the royal couple in the hope of a royal visit to the top of Kinnekulle at some point during the year.
At Kinnekulle stands a stone, called the Queen's Stone, erected in memory of Queen Hedvig Elisabet Charlotta who paid a visit to Kinnekulle's top in 1814. Below on the rock slab on stones are a number of royal names carved in the stone.
On October 22, 2010, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel were visiting in a snowstorm and wrote their names on a cardboard disc, which were carved into stone the following year. Now the hope is that the royal couple's name will also end up in this exclusive and stone-cut autograph book.

Karin af Klintberg, who made the documentary film "Kungen" (The King), was interviewed by Dagens Nyheter DN.

In SVT's party leader hearing before the 1979 parliamentary election, Olof Palme was asked how much a liter of milk costs. He was informed of the correct number, and retorted: "I had no idea." Last summer, when Karin and the king were on a boat on Kalmarsund on Öland, she decided to test him and asked the same question. Karin had wondered if the king ever goes shopping or buys food, he doesn't. But he put the milk price just right, Karin thinks he has his great knowledge of agriculture to thank for that.
Karin had seen the pictures from the coronation ceremony in 1973. She couldn't let go of the future king's nervous but intense gaze, what was behind it? (..)

Åsa Linderborg, whose documentary series "Kungen med två ansikten" (The King with two Faces) has its premiere on 1st February, was interviewed at TV4 Nyhetsmorgon yesterday.
"Documentary about the king - meet the man behind the monarch: "His private life is his work"
Journalist Åsa Linderborg has spent a year delving deeply into the king as a person and the Swedish monarchy. "I have followed the king as long as I have been able to read," says Åsa Linderborg in Nyhetsmorgon. “Our need for traditions puts an individual in this situation, is that right?” is one of the questions she asks herself in the documentary."
Linderborg says in the end of the interview that she believes that there will be a monarchy in Sweden for a very long time still, she doesn't think that Victoria and Estelle will be the last sovereigns. At the video we see also a short clip from the documentary.
Dokumentär om kungen – möt människan bakom monarken_ ”Hans privatliv är hans arbete”

Åsa Linderborg visited Nyhetsmorgon to talk about the new documentary "The King with Two Faces". The program includes a clip from the documentary that deals with how the king's dyslexia was dealt with when he was a child, and how he was denied help and instead labeled as "weakly gifted" as a 14-year-old.
Due to a lack of knowledge about dyslexia, the king did not get the right help at school.
Linderborg says that when a stamp like this is set, it is very difficult to remove it, and she thinks it is simply child abuse, even if you were ignorant of dyslexia at the time. That's why it's so fun to be able to tell that they did an intelligence test when the king went into military service and it turned out that he was above average.
Linderborg sees it as "a tragedy" that the king was forced to go through this as a child and was given such an unfair label.

Review of Karin af Klintberg's documentary
Review: Kungen (The King) (2023)
Unexpected encounter with a recalcitrant king
For just over 100 minutes, we get to see how Karin struggles to get close to the king, but every time it gets hot, he shuts down again. Talking about anything other than the weather or the castle gardens seems awkward. But not because he lacks opinions, but rather because of a fear of exposing himself.
Recension_ Kungen (2023) _ Filmtopp

Herman Lindqvist, author of royal books and former teacher of history to Victoria and Madeleine, believes that the Jubilee year will be filled with negative reports about the king.
A bunch of documentaries about the king will be cabled out. Karin af Klintberg has tried to get to know the king in depth in the documentary "The King", while Åsa Linderborg in the documentary series "The King with Two Faces" examines and portrays the king's life.
Historian and royal expert Herman Lindqvist believes that it could be a difficult year for the king, "with a terrible mass of attacks on him during the year, with angled reports that try to find negative aspects". He says that there are no programs in Sweden that are positive, but everyone must find something wrong. There are many now who will try to create something negative. The king can't take it any other way than trying to keep a good face.
Lindqvist is convinced that the negative reports will replace each other. The big question is rather how the king and the court will tackle the negative storm.
- He cannot go out and respond to every response. Just wait and see how crazy they get. If it's too crazy, the court has to defend itself. I fear the worst in these campaigns. Many people have called me and want me to participate in the most incredible things and I don't. There will be a wave of negative reports, I'm sure of that.

This photographic exhibition commemorates 50 years during which The King has served Sweden as Head of State. It includes official portraits combined with snapshots from The King’s many assignments and engagements. In keeping with The King’s motto, For Sweden – With the Times, the photographs also depict five decades of Sweden as a nation. They reflect the continuity that The King has brought in his role as the longest-reigning monarch in Sweden’s history.

The King and Queen attended today the festive gathering of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.
Two days ago the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts announced that Association Svenskbyborna is awarded the Bernadotte Prize, which is awarded for the first time this year.
The new Bernadotte Prize has been instituted in connection with the recognition of H.M. The King's 50 years on the throne. The prize is part of the Bernadotte program and is to be awarded to a researcher, artist, organization or institution that over a long period of time has contributed to public education or social development in the field of culture, cultural heritage, art and aesthetics. The Bernadotte Prize will be awarded annually starting this year.
The Bernadotte program (collaboration between the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, The Royal Swedish Academy of Music, the Swedish Academy and The Royal Gustavus Adolphus Academy for Swedish Folk Culture) was established in 2016 on the occasion of H.M. The King's 70th birthday. The King, the Academies' patron and first honorary member, will present the Prize at a ceremony on April 19 in the Bernadotte Library.

When Swedish Damtidning meets Karin af Klintberg the week before the premiere of the film "Kungen", the King has not yet seen the finished result, and therefore he will not come to Sunday's gala premiere either.
- No, the King does not want to come to the premiere. And he says in the movie that he doesn't want to see it when it's finished. But we humans are curious anyway, so I will make sure that the royal family has the opportunity to look at conditions that suit them.
Will anyone else from the royal family attend the gala premiere?
- It is not clear. But I know parts of the court will come.

- The King called just before and wished you luck, said Margareta Thorgren to Karin af Klintberg on stage.
Two gifts were handed over to Thorgren to give the King in the form of movie posters. One on the King himself, the other on the King and Karin af Klintberg.
Loneliness is a recurring theme at the documentary. When the King went to boarding school, he was only allowed to come home 1-2 times per term. He says that he felt exposed and looked out for during his upbringing. The older he got, the harder it was, he found and handled it with being quiet.
When Karin asked if he goes to a therapist, the King says no, he will solve it himself.
Karin brings up the day Victoria is to take over and the conversation is therefore about death.
The King doesn't really want to talk about the subject. Victoria comments that it is not something you talk about in the family.
The King also summarizes how he has dealt with the rumors and writings throughout his life.
- We have learned to steel ourselves.
Why?
- To survive.
