Nicholas de Roumanie Medforth-Mills and Alina Maria Binder - September 30th, 2018

An article about the wedding from the magazine The Economist:

NICHOLAS MEDFORTH-MILLS, grandson of the late King Michael of Romania, is getting married on September 30th. To the chagrin of Romanian monarchists, it will not be the royal wedding they have longed for. Their hopes of reinstating a king or queen in Romania have stumbled over the problem of agreeing on an heir.

In recent years there have been growing calls in Romania for a restoration of the monarchy. Earlier this year, the eagle in the national coat of arms again donned its steel crown.

But they have no future after Margarita so soon they will have vanished

But Nicholas is not and never was the heir. His aunt was. And now his mother is. Since females can procreate the royal dynasty, they are not out of heirs.

Who comes after Margarita? One of her sisters, I believe? (Can't remember her name). Other than her, who is there? Who else can speak fluent Romanian, has chosen to live in Romania and has any semblance of recognition with the Romanian man on the street? No one from what I can see, other than Nicholas. In 30 or 40 years, who's the public face of the RRF, doing what we see them doing at the moment? No one seems to know.

The Romanian RF has a unique opportunity it seems to me, for the family to play an increasing role in the future of the country and, who knows, maybe even a restoration. But they choose to shoot themselves in the foot continually. This wedding should be a triumph for the family now that King Michael (around whom everything within the royal house centred) has gone, instead it's just a massive own goal.

It was King Michael who proposed an own line of succession, bypassing the existing line of succession (which would see the Fürst von Hohenzollern as successor).

The current succession formally still is a proposed one, as ultimately the Romanians have to decide on establishing a monarchy or not. Even the current "custodian of the Crown" is only King Michael's proposed successor, until the Romanians will ever have their say. Until then his proposed line is followed:

Princess Margareta
Princess Elena
Nicholas (removed by King Michael)
Karina
Princess Irina (removed by King Michael)
Michael (removed by King Michael)
Angelica (removed by King Michael)
Princess Sophia (added by King Michael)
Élisabeth (added by King Michael)
Princess Maria

The choir of the Romanian Opera, led by conductor Daniel Nicolae Jinga, will sing in the religious service.
The guests have begun to come to the Church. Most are transported by minibuses from the resort hotels where they have been staying since Saturday. On Saturday night, Prince Nicolae and Alina gave a reception at the Palas hotel where guests from 13 countries participated.

Article on marriages of Romanian monarchs - what I found of interest is that no royal marriage has ever taken place in Romania, and that the constitution did not allow Romanian Kings to marry Romanian women

There was a royal wedding (the one of Prince Paul) back in the 1930s in Romania, even taking place in the same church as today. And the wedding reception of this Prince also took place in the Casino of Sinaia, exactly like it is done today.

Thanks for this. It is possible that the article I posted refers to kings only, then.

So today's wedding has things in common with Prince Paul's. Now I better understand the choice of locations.

The wedding dress occurs to me as a synthesis of the ones of Queen Sonja and Queen Màxima. The embroideries on the collar and the arms are very beautiful!

That was Princess Ileana the sister of King Carol II. who married Archduke Anton of Austria there. But King or Crown Prince of Romania had married in Romania they married always abroad in the Homecountry of the bride.

Sort of crowns have been put on the heads of the couple: is this the orthodox custom for everyone?

Yes orthodox custom for everyone.

Yes on the Greek Royal Weddings was over the heads maybe because they are heavy i don't know , but to all the other orthodox weddings they put them on the head.

Princesses Elisabeth and Ileana also married in Romania.

Who is Nicolae's sister among the ladies at her left?

It looks like many many people have come out today to see them! His aunt won’t like that!

Elisabeth is the one on the far left.

Why are they walking around the altar?

Sweet moment when the bishop brought Alina the flowers she'd forgotten at the altar.

Are there not usuall held crown over the heads of the bridal Couple? At last this was done at the greek royal Weddings.

It seems that the archbishop is giving a very personal and fun speech to Nicolae and Alina-Maria.
Sounds like he has called the groom "principe Nicolae"

Sounds like the arch-bishop is mentioning the constitution, princess Margareta... I hope we can get a translation of his speech

The archbishop shared some anecdotes from the book The Road Home (Drumul spre casă) that was published about Nicholas in 2015. He shared what Nicholas' aunt Margarita and his mother Helen had written about their nephew and son in the book. He also mentioned the time that Nicholas spent with his grandparents in Versoix.

The archbishop has also brought up King Michael and Queen Anne many times.

The royal wedding of the former prince Nicolae with Alina Binder. People shouted "Long live the future king of Romania!"
General Gelaledin Nezir is the master of ceremonies of the former prince Nicolae's wedding with Alina Maria Binder. Nezir is the one who has successfully organized the funerals of King Mihai and queen Ana. The general is Chief of Cabinet of the Minister of National Defense, Mihai Fifor. The carriage where the couple climbed is handmade from solid wood. It is brought from Italy by an equestrian center in Craiova and is the first time it is used. The carriage will be pulled by two black horses from the Frisian race.

It was a beautiful ceremony and I'm grateful to Nicolae and Alina-Maria that they let me see it. They looked very happy and Alina-Maria's dress was simple but lovely and suited her so well. And the veil was amazing. The choir was fantastic and there was a lot of warmth at the ceremony and at the speech of the archbishop. And they left the church with style.

Yes, several times. There are many in Romania who would never call him otherwise.
What's special here is that the arch-bishop calls Nicolae a prince, means this is the official position of the romanian orthodox Church against the Custodian of the Crown?

Thank you, I hope to get a full transcript to translate and read in detail

I can only assume that this particular bishop is not "happy" about Nicolae´s current (non-) position within the RF and how this situation was dealt with...

They were escorted by their godparents. They stood beside Nicolae and Alina-Maria the whole wedding. They had two couples as godparents. Alina-Maria was escorted by Liviu Popescu, so I think Nicolae was escorted by Simona Popescu. I think that Alina-Maria's parents were the couple which came out with the happy couple and the godparents and stood with the at the church stairs.
I think that Alina-Maria's father stands beside her at this photo.

At the wedding were invited several volunteers from Tasuleasa Social Association. The day before Prince Nicolae got married, hundreds of kilometers away, in Pasul Tihuța was opened first 140 kilometers of Via Transilvanica, most spectacular hiking trail in the country. Prince Nicolae has been with Tasuleasa Social for some years, and if the opening would not have overlapped preparing his wedding, he would certainly have been present. Several volunteers from Tasuleasa Social, led by Tibi and Alin Uşeriu took part today in the wedding. Social Tasuleasa volunteers have prepared a special gift for Prince Nicholas, as Alin Uşeriu told in the inauguration of Via Transilvanica on Saturday: "We are invited to the wedding of Prince Nicolae. We are very happy. I made a special beer, as a gift for him and dedicate him a part of this project, he is ambassador of this project".

It is a pitqy that the guests have to visit the Castle like every other Tourist. In other circumstances the reception after the Wedding would have taken place there.

The bride was stunning, the setting was wonderful but where was the grooms mother?
