I am talking about royal dignity and decorum. This was nowhere to be detected tonight. In all books about Queen Beatrix the word dignitas id a constante. In Beatrix' opinion a kingship, which simply is mainly ceremonial and protocollary by nature in modern days, can only function with respect to dignity, decorum, distance.

And I wholeheartedly agree with that opinion of my old Queen.

I do not disagree about your view of your old Queen, but in this context, despite my not liking Maxima's dress at all, I do believe neither royal dignity nor royal decorum has been compromised at all. Max has just worn a terrible dress, period.

Thank you for saying that! Disliking the dress is fine. But, that comment was bordering on slut shaming Queen Maxima.

The Dutch word waardigheid is translated as dignity which does not cover the whole meaning of the word, but of course what meant is: royal dignity and decorum one can expect from a Queen during a State Visit.

When she wore this at a birthday party, allez, but she wore this as a representative of the State of the Netherlands. She received honourable guests and the fine fleur of Norway, dressed like she was going to the Casino de Monte-Carlo.

Maxima has done nothing to compromise anything. Again, the comments are bordering on slut shaming this woman for wearing a dress that is different. She is NOT putting the entire monarchy in any type of jeopardy nor going to cause some international incident. She did not show up naked or show anything inappropriate. Maxima is also a younger generation and will obviously wear things that are more up-to-date and modern. But I guess some just have to clutch their pearls about anything that does not look like it is from the 18th century. If that is what people want to look at I can direct them to another thread on this forum.

I hope I have some right of speaking as I am a Dutchman speaking about the Dutch Queen, lavishy paid by Dutch taxpayers, representing our country abroad.

You can post your opinion as much as you like. Just as I have a right to post my opinion, which in this case, disagrees with yours.

With the difference that you accuse me of shaming with a certain profession, leaving me totally bewildered: where does that come from, for heavens' sake? But soit, so be it. The one will think Máxima rocks and the other will think Máxima sinks. Tomorrow is a new day, with new sartorial chances.

Yes so be it as I stand by my comment. Que sera sera.

As a Dutchie I fully agree with Duc et Pair. I don't think this was a good choice for a queen representing my country abroad during a state visit.

And I like to reiterate: nobody was slut shaming the queen in any way - there is a huge 'in between' area of what might be expected of a queen on a state visit vs how someone prefers to interpret previous posters' words. If she would have worn this at a more 'edgy' occasion or in private that would be totally fine - but imho it's not really appropriate for this occasion.

Máxima herself often shows that she is able to dress differently based on the event: very representative in her role as queen abroad or during 'regional visits' in the Netherlands; more business-like during UN official meetings; and more smart-casual during local visits in her UN role and often during other visits in the Netherlands.

And during the whole State Visit, the day events and the gala banquet: a fabulous Queen. Today was probably also fabulous, but it is more a dress for a socialute on the red carpet of a film festival than for a Queen.

She chose Claes Iversen, a Danish-Dutch couturier, but she was in Norway. Maybe she could have chosen a Norwegian couturier. The two really beautiful gold-with-crystal bowls Queen Máxima chose as a gift to the Norwegian royal couple were from a Norwegian artist, I believe.

So she could have gone for a Norwegian couturier too. Anyway, also Laurentien and Mabel have this sort of unconventional choices, but not at State Visits.

I simply think that this was an awful gown , no matter the wearer or the occasion . Generally I find HM's outfits very suitable/ stylish , both for the Queen & her job . This evening was a " hole " too far .

For the Oslo evening of November 10, I think the gown is awful and it looks as if Queen Maxima is not serious about being there and I think this even though Queen Maxima is known for wearing odd clothes some times.

I don't know why, but I like the dress. It's something that I think only Maxima could wear. It's fine for her to look showy and unusual if she wants.

And everyone who dislikes it knows she's worn far bigger disasters.

She looks lovely and queenly and is representing her country just fine.

Awful dress! It just needs to be burned and not worn on anyone!!

I agree. I don’t always like Maxima’s fashion choices but she usually manages to make things work (and when she’s at her best she’s fabulous) and she’s generally suitably dressed for her role and the occasion. This isn’t one of those times.

IMO there’s nothing wrong or misogynistic in pointing out that not every occasion is suitable for a piece of clothing full of holes. If WA showed up with holes like that in his shirt and pants, done in the name of fashion, there would be an uproar and “undignified” would be the kindest word people would use to describe the situation.

A bad episode of Gooise Vrouwen,or Silvie Meis at her worst. No Maxima, burn it accidently, please!!

It is absolutely not a Dress for a State Visit to old Monarchs who are 80th years old!

I bet Sonja appreciated it. She used to hang out with Warhol for heaven's sake. And Harald is a pretty calm guy who sees the funny side of most things.

I would not use "the delicate sensibilities of 84 year old monarchs" as a generic excuse to hate the dress.

Yes, the holes are pretty tacky. I would not worry about offending the norwegian monarchs, it is just an ugly dress. The color is nice.

Its among the worst Maxima has worn and there have been quite a few of those moments.

It is something completely different. It is also a Maxima dress.... and can't think of anyone else wearing it.
And I like it, really I do. It suit her, she looks nice:flowers:

I guess she can get away with the lows, because when she gets it right, she gets it very right!

Yesterday it was the Feast of Saint-Martin. Usually it goes with bonfires. I hope they had a bonfire with a ritual burning of that Claes Iversen gown. Brrrr. At least it then had some use in providing warmth in the November evening...

In fairness, Max has a fair few items of clothing that could join that pile. Who could forget that paid of red satin culottes, amongst other horrors.

Exactly! I think the dress is horrible, but Maxima takes likes to take fashion risks and every now and then we have a horrible result like the swiss cheese dress, but most results are fab and can only be worn by a character like Maxima.

I don't know why, but for me the dress, Tiara, and hairstyle does not work.. so much is going on on the dress, a simple updo would be much better..Its nice to see the Aquamarine Tiara again.

I like it.As I like the sunflowers behind her.Symbol
